Okay, so tomorrow I'm getting all my wisdom teeth taken out... It's freaking me out a little bit. Okay alot. And I keep getting mixed opinions about it... some friends say it honestly isn't that bad... just some pain and a lot of sleeping, and some say it's horrible... care to comfort me or make me dread it even more and tell me what to expect?
Wisdom Teeth?
they knock you out so the surgery doesnt hurt at all. afterwards youre so sleepy youll barely be able to open your eyes and youll have a loooong sleep. the painkillers they give you afterwards work wonders. its not the pain that bothered me it was the fact that i couldnt brush well the first few days and chew. youll probably be more upset about hunger than pain. swelling will last 1-2 weeks. haha i looked like a pufferfish when i got mine out a month ago. good luck!
Reply:It all depends on your body's reaction to it, some people are in pain for awhile, might miss a week of school or work because of it, some are ok the next day. I think you do get Vicodin or Percocets, or something like that though for the pain. Good Luck!!

Reply:It depends on the doctor and how he treats U! I had 2 options when I had my wisdom tooth pulled out.I could be sedated for 4 hours or be willing to go along with the pain and it just lasts for 20 minutes. For me,it wasn't that painful. But I think everyone's pain sensitivity is different from each other.he'll also end up giving U some anti-bacterial medicine after-wards to fight off the infection. It'll make U really drowsy for a few days,so i recommend calling in sick for those few days!
Reply:Yeah,i have to get mine taken out in a month... Scares me too... I have had 4 teeth pulled while i was fully awake and even that didn't bother me as bad.... although I do know that wisdom teeth are a bit different, being as I have to get them cut out... believe me, A few days back my jaw was swollen...And i could barely stick one finger between the top..and bottom of my teeth... it was that swollen. Like you I have also got mixed opinions... My sister tells me that they hurt when she got them out,but only for a few days... other people, like my mom...who had them out while she was awake...tells me it wasn't that bad. In the long run, It'll be better..no doubt. I'm actually kind of looking forward to getting it over with...the sooner, the better.
Reply:My fiance had his taken out when he was 16, all his were impacted and not even through the gums and so they cut his out. He was knocked out with laughing gas and said he went home and slept and then woke up and was bored and went to work. Me on the other hand, does not do well wiht pain. I have no problem with needles, but I have never been knocked out or sedated or had any kind of surgery for that matter. 3 of my 4 wisdom teeth are in, and the 1 that is partially in will have to be cut out. I don't want to be cut and I know I hate stiches, but oh well, its got to happen sooner or later. And mine have been hurting me for a while so I guess it will all be better when they are out. I am getting IV sedation and my fiance is taking me to drive me there and back, and also my best friend is coming with me because I am horrified that I will not wake up or that there will be blood everwhere, but my oral surgeon is so good that you have to wait 2 months to get in to see him. I get mine out October 30th and am taking that day and also October 31st off to recover. Thanks to my vacation days I can do it. Any my dental insurance, because without it, it would be like $1,000 or more, but I am only going to end up paying $167, so I am just gonna get it done while I can and also while I have insurance. No sense in waiting and then add the pain of the bill to the pain of the surgery. But I would not worry if I were you. I say it will all be better once they are out because they can get infected, crowd your other teeth and cause a lot of jaw pain.
Reply:i took out my wisdom teeth almost 4 weeks ago. i was also totally anxious and terrified of the whole process. now, i am just so glad that i have gotten it over with and don't have to go though it again in my life.
don't freak out- it really is not THAT bad. my surgeon inserted an IV to keep me sedated (that doesn't hurt, just a tiny pinch) put a gas mask on my face and told me to breathe in. so i inhale and it's like i feel myself slipping out of consciousness- like i'm quickly entering a deep slumber. you will feel so relaxed and calm from the sedation. then i woke up groggy in less than 25 minutes and it was over! you won't remember what happened. i lay down in the recovery room for 15 minutes and my mom gave me a ride home.
i had all 4 removed at once, and 2 of them were impacted. they gave me stiches for all the holes so there was not a lot of bleeding. i only used the gauze for 2 hours. your mouth and tongue will be numb for 5 hours after the surgery. i didn't take the tylenol 3 they prescribed and had 2 advil's every few hours for about 4 days. it's not really the pain but more of the discomfort that you just have to wait out. the first 2 days will be the worst! when you wake up there is the nastiest blood taste in your mouth but just drink some water, swallow it and it will go away. your face will be swollen by the 3rd day but it will start to decline from there and last about a week. make sure you use ice packs when you get home to help decrease swelling. and your jaw will probably be sore. so the worst is really the 1st 3 days. after that it will be gradually getting better and better!
in a week you will be eating normally and everthing will be totally fine. just stock up on mashed potatoes, soups, pudding and pasta for first 4/5 days.
in a week you go for a check-up and i got a syringe i fill with salt water to clean the holes for 4 weeks. kind of annoying but after a week you can eat normally.
remember to keep your mouth clean and rinse with warm salt water the day after your surgery to prevent infection (or else the healing will be more painful and take even longer). and take your antibiotics, get lots of rest and lol at least you get to catch up on a lot of tv and movies. hope everything goes well for you! relax and stop worrying ;)
