Wisdom Teeth?

As i am sat here anwering questions, my partner is having a wisdom tooth out. I have never had this done and apparently it is really painful. What can i expect when he gets home? Is he gonna be in loads of pain? Shall i stock up on soup and pain killers? or wont he be that bad?

It depends on whether the tooth is erupted (fully through) or impacted (not yet through).


If it is a straight forward extraction then expect some discomfort after the procedure but nothing that will last more then 24 hours.


Impacted wisdom's that are removed can cause much more discomfort and swelling around the face but again apart from painkillers and rest there is not much more to be done.


Your husband should avoid eating while the area is numb usually 2 to 3 hours then after that eating can be resumed but as much as possible on the other side of the mouth, he must not rinse his mouth for 24 hours or drink any alcohol as this will disturb the blood clot which will lead to more bleeding and an infection (dry socket) can set up inside the wound which is very painful. After 24 hours he can begin mouth rinsing with hot sat water 3 times a day for a week to keep the area clean and aid healing.


The first 24 hours are the worst after that he'll be as right as rain!

Reply:Nah, I've just had two teeth out right at the back..... It doesn't hurt while he has it done, but an hour or so after, it may sting a little.... Paracetamol and Ibro will do the job!!
Reply:He's a man so of course hes going to think and act like he's in loads of pain! I recommend you stock up of forbearance and patience
Reply:i hope he brings it home because they are about 2 ins long!!! put him to bed and go out on the beer as not to disturb him in the evening. poor ole love.
Reply:Its not as bad as it sounds, but have some painkillers there for him.
Reply:i had one wisdom tooth pulled and the other 3 cut out all at once. when he first gets home, expect him to sleep. stock up on soup and jello, mashed potatoes...anything soft for awhile. i had mine done on friday, went to a basketball game on saturday, and was a little sore on sunday. by monday i thought i would never make it. i don't know if this is the way for everyone, or if i did to much. hope all of this helps and happy holidays
Reply:Depends - some are worse than other - depends how deep the roots are. He will no doubt be sore for a couple of days and have some bruising. Stock up on painkillers xxxxxx
Reply:some people are really bad, some people are fine. i personally had all 4 pulled and was on vicodin immediatly after. it made me so sick i would puke, pass out for 4 hours, then have to take another and the cycle would start again. i only ate yogert and slimfast for 2 days, but never had any swelling or bruising or much pain. LOTS of blood tho, like i ruinned 2 pillows.





so long as they take the meds prescribed, they will probably be fine. i would get some noodle soup or something, nothing chunky, for at least a day, but they will probably be fine by tomorrow
Reply:He shouldn't be too bad, but get soup and ice cream in just in case.


One thing to watch though is that his mouth will probably still be numb from the anaesthetic so you may have to warn him when he drools all over the place hehe yuk!
Reply:Really depends on the person - I met one lady who only had to have soup for a day and a painkiller or two.


On the other hand, my dad had one of his out and he looked like a purple and yellow hamster for two weeks and needed drugging up and liquids...





Depends on the state of the tooth when it's removed, the angle it's removed from (my dad's had come through sideways and they had to chip the jawbone to get it out) and the skill of the dentist/oral surgeon.





I'd stock up on soup just in case...
Reply:Is he just having a local ansthetic? If so, then he will be fine to start off with, but it will start to ache in a couple of hours. Be prepared! Being a man he is gonna moan like hell and think he's dying!
Reply:I had my 4 wisdom teeth taken out . 2 one week and 2 the next . after the first two i felt crap i was lying on the couch with iodine swabs stuck in my gums where my teeth used to be i also had a cold sweat and couldnt stop shaking violently at times . the second time wasnt so bad i didnt get a sweat and start shaking when i got home . there is a good chance of infection if its not kept clean and dont use mouthwash use warm salty water to wash your mouth out .
Reply:I suppose a lot could depend on whether the extraction is carried out under a local anaesthetic (at the dentist) or whether under a general anaesthetic, carried out in hospital or the like.





When my mother had her wisdom teeth extracted at the dentist, she had quite a few bruises on her face and was in a fair bit of pain.





A bit of sympathy and TLC should suffice though and play things by ear with regards pain and food requirements, as everybody heals differently.
