: ( wisdom teeth?

i recently learned i'll be getting my wisdom teeth out in the next year or so. I'm really worried:

I am more afraid of needles than anything else in the world. while (I think) I'm generally a calm and reasonable person, needles make me to regress to a three year old. i throw tantrums, i scream (I once punched the nurse, omg). afterwards I feel really embarrassed and bad for making everyone put up with me, but I seriously feel like I have no control over this. even if I think I'll be okay, I freak out when I see the needle.

I've tried numbing creams, sedatives, not looking at the needle, whatever, nothing helps.

I am also not a fan of pain in general (i'm a wuss), but what I'm really concerned about is the injections.

i know sometime they put you under general anaesthesia, but they probably won't do that with me (I'm not too keen on that either, anyways).

I try tobe optemistic, but realistically i'm not getting over this needle thing. so my question is: do I have any other options?

Tell your dentist that you behave this way, see if you can get some anti anxiety meds before going in.. xanax or valium may calm you down (my dentist will prescribe me 2, one for the night before and one for the day of). An MP3 player is a must for me going in. Either that or you can choose no anesthetic and once they start tugging on your teeth, your going to beg for that needle!! Honestly tho, anti anxiety meds may be your best bet. Maybe you could bring in a friend for support. Good Luck.
Reply:you have to be a big girl.

Ask for headphones, most dentists have them or bring your own and turn it way up. close your eyes tight and open wide. It will be over before you know it. ask for gas. i was nervous and felt like I would puke and afterward felt like a dumb-dumb because it actually did not hurt at all and went quite quickly. DONT LOOK AT THE NEEDLE. eyes closed tight and loud music.
Reply:99% of the time they put you out for this procedure. They put an IV in and you remember nothing after that, and they are usually extremely quick and good at IVs. It is really easy. It is just the fear of the unknown.
Reply:You can get a sedative before they even get started. Speak with the doctor and let him/her know how terrified you are. They work with this all the time. They can make some suggestions and you can figure out what will work the best for you.

My partner had his out last year and didn't even need painkillers after - just Tylenol. You'll be fine!
Reply:take an ipod/mp3 player turn it up and ignore everything. i was in the same position u were. i was either to be completely knocked out for the procedure(was knocked out once hated it) or get stuck with the needle a few times. u rly dont have any options if ur wisdom teeth absolutely have to be removed. if u have enough room for them see how they come in.

how someone go with u that helps to.

p.s. im only 14
Reply:i HATE needles, but i recently got my wisdom teeth out and it really wasn't that bad at all. they gave me valium to take before the surgery, and i was so relaxed that i didn't even care about the needle going in for the anesthesia. they also put a numbing cream on my arm, so i didn't feel it going in at all. don't worry, you'll be fine :)
Reply:oh honey, i'm so freaked out by needles and had the same anxiety as you're having now. but trust me, in the long run, its better to just get them out sooner than later. you heal faster when younger anyways so yeah. try asking for day surgery? that way you'll have GA.. but if its just a plain extraction, just gotta go with the flow and get a jab done and have them pulled. i'd personally recommend day surgery for you seeing as your anxiety can be rather physically abusive on those around (so cute). its better to be konked out when they're drilling in your cavities ey? hehe. either way, good luck and hope i helped i the least bit.
Reply:I just had my wisdom teeth pulled 2 days ago. Getting them pulled is not a problem. Have them use laughing gas on you. It helps you relax. Kinda like you had a few cocktails. Afterwards is the worst. My dentist prescribed some really strong pain pills. They make me a little sleepy though. Just make sure yo have a few days off when you have your surgery. My face is still swollen. I'm glad I got it over with.

Good Luck :)
