I'm getting all 4 of my wisdom teeth pulled thursday, and was wondering if anyone has had the operation. Could you share what its like, and how it was. Im 18, and have to admit a little scared of oral surgery.
Wisdom teeth?
I just told someone this story.. so I will tell it to you. Don't be worried. You will be fine! Here is what happened to me:
I got all of mine taken out about a year ago. I am not exactly sure about the exact procedure but I can tell you what I went through.
I went to the place and they sat me in a chair. They gave me an IV in my hand and some laughing gas which didn't make me laugh... it made me confused... lol... The doctor came in and tried to talk to me and I was so confused I couldn't even answer the questions. I noticed myself becoming sleepy and I tried to fight it, but before I knew it... I was out!
I don't remember anything about the surgery at all. I just remember waking up. It felt like I was asleep for maybe a few minutes or an hour even though the procedure takes 3 hours. The first thing I remember is a nurse reaching into my mouth and pulling out the gause and putting clean gause in its place. My mother and a nurse helped me to the car. I was aware enough to give my mother direction back to our house from the doctor.
I don't remember any initial pain probablly because I was still drugged up. I sat in my recliner and my mom brought me blankets and pillows and made me nice and comfy. I think I even feel asleep. The next thing I remember is my mom taking out the gause in my mouth and putting new gause in my mouth. I closed my mouth really hard and the gause pressed against the incisions and the most intense pain surged through my mouth. I think I even cried! So I made a mental note to not ever do that again and then I was fine.
I took meds every few hours. They weren't hard core meds, they were just like a really high dosage per pill. I called it "super motrin."
I felt kind of a throbbing, nagging, under the skin, inside the bone pain. It wasn't bad.. it was just there and annoying!
As for eating... I ate regular food that first day! My mom started me out on Chicken noodle soup and then later on gave me a sandwich. Eating was fine for me.
I slept fine except my mom says that I made this sucking noise but I think that is because my mouth was swollen.
Swelling was medium. My cheaks and jaw were swollen for about 3 or 4 days. I put cold packs on my face at first to prevent swelling and then hot packs on my face to sooth the pain.
After 3 days, I was completely fine. I was a little wozzy from being drugged up and laying in bed, but I was up and walking around. I even went to a party!
My family doesn't believe in taking a lot of meds so I was off of those after 3 days as well. I felt some pain but it wasn't something that I couldn't handle. My incisions had closed up and my stitches fell.
I went back for my follow up after 7 days and the doctore was like "wow! you heal really fast!" After that, my life resumed like nothing had ever happened. I feel no pain or discomfort from it. It sounds weird... but I would do it again for the drugs! lol That was the best part!
Good luck!
Reply:I understand your fear dude!
I had mine done but i had to do it in 2 trips, 2 on one side then the other 2.
It wasnt as bad as people make it out to be really. I was swollen up for about a week but i think you will heal faster cuz your young, its harder on adults.
I had mine done while I was awake so I hear and saw everything like the tools they used but i didnt want to be put to sleep. Some people say its better to have it done while your asleep.Good Luck you'll be fine. Think of it this way, you get to eat ice cream for like a week and nobody can say anything! Also you can prolly get your mom to do anything you want! Good luck you'll be fine
Reply:Ok, well I personally haven't had the procedure so you might ignore this. But my friend had his four pulled last Thursday and was all better by Sunday. Also this is a very common proceure and you will be knocked out for it. The dentist performing the extraction will know exactly what to do and how to make you as comfortable as possible. Don't be afraid to ask questions, they love it when you do. Hope this helped.
Reply:i had 2 of my wisdoms pulled one on the top left side of my mouth and one on the right bottom side of my mouth. i was nervous before too, but i requested that they give me laughing gas (for the IV in my arm) (don't like needles and such) and i barely felt the prick of the IV, and they made me bit down on this mouth piece and i was i out, i got knocked out (by request) i awoke what seemed like 5 mins later and it was done! no pain nothing. the only pain i had was that food kept getting stuck in my bottom (hole i guess) and i had to go back to the surgeon for a plastic needle thing that squirted water in the space to get the food out. and it was okay after that!
