So, I got my wisdom teeth out on Tuesday and my face has swollen up like a balloon. Usually I have a heart shaped face, but right now it is a square. When can I expect all this swelling to go down?

I had my wisdom teeth out and it took about 5 days for the swelling to go down. Keep ice on it as much as possible. That will take the swelling down. Also take Tylenol which will also help with the swelling, but not with any other pain meds.

Reply:Give it some time. To help the swelling to go down you need to put an icepack on it and keep using it until it helps.
Reply:Not sure if you did this, but you should have taken 2 ibeprophen the night before, 2 1 hour before the procedure, and 2 right after (as long as the RX you got did NOT contain ibeprophen). I know it%26#039;s too late, but take 2 advil and apply heat.
Reply:Always get your wisdom teeth removed by an oral and maxillofacial surgeron. Wisdom teeth removal can hurt but statistically is higher with dentists than with specialists.

I had all four of my wisdom teeth pulled on Friday and my questions is, how long before you can eat solid food?

I woke up today and felt alot better and have%26#039;nt even taken an advil all day... The thing that sux the most is not being able to eat solid food, I have had to blend everything up just to eat....
I was horribly scared to have this done and everyone told me it was gonna be horrible but it really isnt bad at all, and both my bottem teeth were impacted and infected. You will do fine don%26#039;t worry about it for weeks like I did!!!! :]

After she had swelling and a little pain, but they gave her pain killers and witin a week or two she started feeling better. She really didn%26#039;t let it get to her.

They were impacted and had to be broken up into smaller pieces to get them out. I was fine afterward. I even went on retreat the next day and went horseback riding. I do, however, know of some people who have had some trouble with bruising, pain and swelling, so I think it really depends on you. If you don%26#039;t let it freak you out and you do what the dentist tells you to do, you should be fine.

Reply:I had all four taken out at once. My dentist referred me to an oral surgeon because my teeth were all impacted, and he knocked me out with sodium pentathol and valium. I didn%26#039;t feel a thing and don%26#039;t remember a thing until they woke me up. If you can get the same treatment I recommend it highly. However, it did hurt quite a bit afterward. There%26#039;s no getting around it though, and I%26#039;m not so sure it%26#039;s better to have two teeth taken out in one visit then getting the other two removed after another visit because then you have to deal with the pain twice. It hurt me for a couple of days, and the surgeon gave me Tylenol 3, but it didn%26#039;t help much. If you can get it, have the dentist or oral surgeon give you something stronger like Vicodin and 800mg Motrin. Good luck!

But this went away too and I%26#039;m glad I had them all taken out at once because I wouldn%26#039;t want to go through four individual extractions at all.

And they gave me prescription Ibuprofen 600mg, and Percocet (oxycodone) for severe pain, which I really only needed yesterday and I took one this morning. When I woke up this morning it hurt to open my mouth too much. But now I feel better. Yesterday I ate jello, pudding, yogurt, and mashed potatoes. Today I had oatmeal and later macaroni and cheese. I definitely recommend you request to be sedated during the surgery, not just given the laughing gas. I heard it%26#039;s very scary to hear your bones crack when they pull them out, even though you don%26#039;t feel it. Good luck, and no it%26#039;s not always as bad as some people say!

I might be getting my bottom wisdom teeth removed but im really scared when it comes to going to the dentist he said I wont be out but it will be numbed and I can have laughing gas if I want but im still scared how was your experience with it just being numb could you still feel it being done?? Hey there; first of all, please don%26#039;t be scared. I know there is LOT of hype about having wisdom teeth out but take it from me: it%26#039;s not as bad as everyone says. I had all four of mine out with just local numbing shots, and no sedation of any kind. Also, they were all impacted and all still inside my gums (they hadn%26#039;t erupted through yet), so they had to be broken apart inside my head and cut out. Sounds bad, right? But it wasn%26#039;t, and yours sounds like it will be an even less complicated procedure.
If you just get numbed, they%26#039;ll give you a few shots in the mouth, which hurt a tiny little bit- just a little pinch like any needle. Not a big deal. After that you will not feel a thing. You feel the surgeon%26#039;s hands in your mouth, you feel a bit of pressure, but it really doesn%26#039;t feel any different from the patient%26#039;s point of view than having a simple filling. If somebody told you you were just getting a filling done, I bet you wouldn%26#039;t even be able to tell the difference.
But you definitely want to go to a maxillofacial surgeon rather than just a regular dentist. It%26#039;s not a big deal- they%26#039;re just dentists that are specially trained in doing work like this, so they%26#039;ll be able to do it faster, and probably better than a regular dentist who doesn%26#039;t do this procedure ten times every day :) Plus they will be used to working on patients like you who are nervous about having their wisdom teeth out, so they%26#039;ll probably make you feel more at ease. The one I went to had an office that looked just like any other dental office, you won%26#039;t have to go to a hospital or anything. Don%26#039;t let the word surgeon scare you; again, it%26#039;s just a dentist with extra training.
Most importantly, don%26#039;t freak yourself out and let others scare you with horror stories. It will probably only take 1/2 an hour to an hour at most (mine only took about 50 minutes.) It will be over before you know it and you%26#039;ll wonder why you were so scared in the first place. Good luck, I%26#039;m sure everything will be fine.

Hi, Smoking after having wisdom teeth extracted can put you at risk of getting a %26quot;dry socket%26quot;. This is extremely painful and can become infected very easily. I usually recommend my patients not to smoke of alt least 2 weeks after extraction but if you want to be on the safe side, you might want to leave it a few days to another week longer.

I just got my wisdom teeth extracted on thursday, its now sunday. I have been following all the doctor%26#039;s orders to prevent infection, although the pain is gone in the right side the left side still hurts. Its no bad pain, but my left side feels irritated and weird. What could it be?

how does the whole process of getting your wisdom teeth taken out go? how long do your gums hurt after you get them removed? does your face swell, if so, for how long? how long is your face bruised and how long does it take for them to start healing? do they put you to sleep or just numb you a lot? im getting mine taken out soon and im kind of worried about it. thanks.

1. Allow a couple days to heal up....A week max for all my swelling to go down.
2. Gums were tender to touch and while eating about that long too.
3. Only one side of my face swelled up..I had some swelling underneath the bone or something, I had to go on antibiotics but it wasnt that bad, I just had a lump above my jaw and some tenderness underneath....not dry socket..which is an infection and much worse
4. You could be feeling better in just a couple days.
5. They don%26#039;t put you to sleep, just numb the area /extraction site. You take a medication the night before and the day of too, to make you sleepy and take away pain.
6. You should not drive while under medication, or eat a heavy meal the day of your surgery
Reply:I just had two of mine cut out (taken out)... I am 38, was put to sleep for about 45- minutes... with iv sedation. No pain, and I was eating supper that night.. and no pain with my wisdom teeth being removed. Dr was awesome!! No down time, your face does not swell.

Face both swells and bruises. Swelling you are likely looking at 1 to 2 days. Bruising a week maybe.
For the gums to fully heal probably 1 month, maybe more.

Reply:Everyone reacts differently to this process. I had each side done at separate times. The one swelled up for a few days and hurt real bad. The other side hurt, but it was tolerable with motrin. I have never been put under anesthesia for any tooth extractions, and I have had a lot of my teeth removed(bad genetics). You might experience some swelling, probably pain for a couple days, the gums might also be sore. Not everyone bruises from it, I have never bruised. It usually takes a week or two to heal up. follow what they tell you to do - stock up on foods like pudding and jello, ice cream - avoid things that are hot like soup for a few days - and don%26#039;t suck anything up in a straw - both of these will bug the stitches.
take some tylenol - sack out on the couch or in bed and relax for a few days - get some rest - don%26#039;t worry so much -

Reply:i had all four of mine pulled at once, it wasnt as bad as i thought as a matter of fact i didnt feel a thing they numb you, my dentist wouldnt put me to sleep i dont think they do that anymore unless its major. the healing is a couple of days the worst part is after cause you cant eat anything the next day and your mouth is full of saliva and the tell you dont spit because somehow the spit help clothes the holes and preven infection, please dont spit my friend did and she had to go to the emergency room cause her face was so numb and she had gotten an ear infection. so basically a lot of swelling no bruises for me, but its not nearly as bad as you think. at least for me it wasnt. and the procedure is really fast!!
Reply:I had removed 2 wisdom teeth. The whole process depends on whether your wisdom teeth are impacted or not. One of my wisdom teeth was impacted (removing takes longer time in this case). Doctor doesnt put u to sleep, he uses local anesthetic, but it is your choice of the anesthesia that will be used, because i wanted to be put to sleep but then i changed my mind, of course i told them about it couple of days b4 (because it cost more). The healing process varies as well, it heals longer if you had impacted tooth. The stiches need to dissolve too, but you can use pain pills. Your face is swollen for 2 days or so, it isnt that much visible though, no problem. Numbing looks that doctor gives u many little injections around the teeth that are about to be removed, maybe 5 injections for each tooth (more injections for impacted one, because he needs to dig into the bone to get the crap out of there). You dont have to worry about anything because you feel nothing. I still think that i did very good removing those teeth, because in my case the impacted one was a bit infected (that was my idea, because my breath was bad, so it was my choice to remove it, but the other one was with huge cavity, needed canal treatment)

I have been swollen for 5 days now and still alittle brusied.
ALthough the pain for me began to decress after day 3 but still hurts some.
You will be fine, I was so upset about having mine out, I changed my appt twice before my hubby draged me into the office. you will be okay!
You will have a bad week then back to normal
Reply:hey i had all mine taken out a month ago it doesnt hurt at all your face swells for about a week it heals very fast you just kinda bleed alot. I was put to sleep for 30min. Dont worry about it you will be fine trust me!
Reply:My personal opinion is to have two---not all four---done at a time. Depending on your pain threshold, once the anesthetic wears off, you%26#039;ll be in pain, especially if you have all four done at the same time, or if any of your wisdom teeth are impacted. But the dentist will give you pain meds for this. Its been so many years since I had mine removed, but I don%26#039;t believe my face swelled,;definitely not bruised. I wasn%26#039;t asleep when mine were pulled. You%26#039;ll be fine!

Wisdom teeth?
1. Allow a couple days to heal up....A week max for all my swelling to go down.
2. Gums were tender to touch and while eating about that long too.
3. Only one side of my face swelled up..I had some swelling underneath the bone or something, I had to go on antibiotics but it wasnt that bad, I just had a lump above my jaw and some tenderness underneath....not dry socket..which is an infection and much worse
4. You could be feeling better in just a couple days.
5. They don%26#039;t put you to sleep, just numb the area /extraction site. You take a medication the night before and the day of too, to make you sleepy and take away pain.
6. You should not drive while under medication, or eat a heavy meal the day of your surgery
Reply:I just had two of mine cut out (taken out)... I am 38, was put to sleep for about 45- minutes... with iv sedation. No pain, and I was eating supper that night.. and no pain with my wisdom teeth being removed. Dr was awesome!! No down time, your face does not swell.

Face both swells and bruises. Swelling you are likely looking at 1 to 2 days. Bruising a week maybe.
For the gums to fully heal probably 1 month, maybe more.

Reply:They put you under usually not too much when I had mine taken out I woke up once, your gums hurt for about two weeks afterward and you have to eat soft food your cheeks do swell a bit but not much, they start healing immediately they put stitches of protein so they dissolve when your wounds are healed up they usually crush your teeth and take them out in pieces
Reply:Everyone reacts differently to this process. I had each side done at separate times. The one swelled up for a few days and hurt real bad. The other side hurt, but it was tolerable with motrin. I have never been put under anesthesia for any tooth extractions, and I have had a lot of my teeth removed(bad genetics). You might experience some swelling, probably pain for a couple days, the gums might also be sore. Not everyone bruises from it, I have never bruised. It usually takes a week or two to heal up. Reply:i had mine out a few years ago - all the worry about the surgey was over nothing - i felt so much better - they were all impacted and hurt like heck -
anyway - they put you out for the surgery - i was sore for a few days - some swelling, and a really tiny bruise on one side - everyone heals different -
follow what they tell you to do - stock up on foods like pudding and jello, ice cream - avoid things that are hot like soup for a few days - and don%26#039;t suck anything up in a straw - both of these will bug the stitches.
take some tylenol - sack out on the couch or in bed and relax for a few days - get some rest - don%26#039;t worry so much -
